Voces de pasión, Puerto Rico en el mundo
The documentary “Voices of Passion”, a 90-minute film, captures the stories of five Puerto Rican singers who have built international careers around the world.
The stories of five Puerto Rican singers with outstanding international careers in classical music are told and celebrated in the documentary “Voices of Passion”, directed by filmmaker Sonia Fritz. The film premieres on Wednesday, August 30, at 7:00 p.m., at the Jesús María Sanromá Hall of the Bertita and Guillermo L. Martínez Theater at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Supported by Humanities Puerto Rico, the production follows the careers of Larisa Martínez, Rafael Dávila, Meechot Marrero, Laura Pabón, and Joel Prieto—singers who trained at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and who now represent the island on some of the most prestigious stages in the United States and Europe.
Over the course of three years, Fritz—together with a production team—researched and documented the journeys of these artists, from their beginnings in the San Juan Children’s Choir to earning their master’s degrees and shining on stages around the world, including in countries such as China, Chile, and Russia. The documentary features interviews with the singers, along with family scenes filmed in the places where they grew up: Larisa Martínez in Orocovis, Meechot Marrero in Corozal, Joel Prieto in Cayey, and Laura Pabón and Rafael Dávila in San Juan.
THE LAST COLONY
In 1898, the United States colonized Puerto Rico as part of the Spanish American War.
For 114 years the people of Puerto Rico have maintained a
polarizing debate on the STATUS ISSUE that has been front and center of the political discourse on the Island. Puerto Ricans (American citizens since 1917) constantly
dispute between the options of Statehood, Independence and the current status known in the Island as E.L.A.
On November 6, 2012 the people of Puerto Rico held the fourth plebiscite in the Island’s history to try to redefine the political relationship with the United States.
Weeks before the plebiscite vote, two-time EMMY Award winner Juan Agustín Márquez
traveled back to his homeland and interviewed leading politicians, historians, sociologists, and economists to dissect the status debate in a multilayered conversation about the pros and cons of each option on the ballot.
His mission: To explain the status debate to the people of the United States, Congress and the President, and bring the American people up to date on this century old question:
Will there be a change in status in America’s Last Colony?

NO ME LLAMEN ANTONIA
One last effort to grasp what is left of a woman’s memory. Her existence vanishing through what she no longer remembers.
THIS ISLAND (ESTA ISLA)
Siblings Charlie and Bebo maintain a humble but freewheeling lifestyle living in a public housing complex in their coastal Puerto Rican town. They drink and party together — often on the beach, at night, with friends — and by day, they try to make ends meet as fishermen with the occasional side hustle. Against this backdrop, teenage Bebo meets and falls in love with Lola, a young woman from a privileged family. But when Charlie becomes embroiled in shady dealings running up against the business of a local drug dealer, the young lovers flee and seek shelter deep in the island’s untamed and isolated mountains… biding their time to evade peril.
With grounded performances and striking cinematography, Lorraine Jones and Cristian Carretero’s confident first feature is a potent exploration of wayward youth seeking a better future for themselves amidst their precarious present.
